Lakes Road Trip

Motorbike parts are not something I would have thought about in helping me visit somewhere I had never been before but when the opportunity arose I took it.

A friend needed to pick up some things for her husband's bike from a place outside of Bairnsdale which is roughly a 3hr drive from her place and as I was free asked if I wanted company-at a loose end (and because I had never been before I said why not?) I'm glad I did, but again that question arose-why have I not been in this area before? I've traveled half way across the world but not even ventured 3-4 hours east of where I live and why not?? And the second question I asked myself was when can I come back again?

Parts collected we headed for lunch in Paynesville,

which has been a fishing village (originally called Toonalok 'a place of many fish' until 1879) since the 1850s, and has grown to be a popular tourist spot.

Paynesville is a gateway to many of the Gippsland Lakes and it has many cafes, shops, caravan parks and places to stay, and is certainly pretty enough, but I imagine in school holiday time it would be bedlam so my tip....try and visit out of season (it was still extremely warm today so if I wanted to swim and sunbathe and be on the water it would have been perfect.)

From here we took a 40 minute drive to Lakes Entrance which has some very beautiful and rather expensive 'holiday homes' as well as the run of the mill caravan parks, motels, hotels etc. A great spot for water sports, fishing etc or just to take some spectacular photos,

I would highly recommend any of the towns around the lakes for longer than a daytrip-but if that is all you have then try and fit it into your plans because it is a very pretty place to spend some time.
