Things to know about Victoria

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT VICTORIA

Victoria is the smallest mainland state, lying in the Southeast of Australia, bordered by South Australia and New South Wales and the Bass Strait (and Tasmania) in the south.

Don't forget that although small in Australian terms it still takes a while to get around, from Melbourne to the New South Wales border it is about 3 hours drive, or to the South Australian border it will be closer to 5 hours of driving. From Nelson in the west of Victoria to Mallacoota in the east the travel time is nearly 11 hours, so be aware if you make plans to travel the length and breadth of Victoria.

Victoria has a population of around 5.5million people the majority living in the capital Melbourne and in the area surrounding Port Phillip Bay.

VIctoria is known as 'The Garden State' and lives up to it's name with beautiful gardens, parks and reserves. There are beautiful beaches, around the Bay, along the Great Ocean Rd and the Mornington Peninsula.

There are great ski fields, Hotham, Falls Creek, Buller. There is plenty of stunning landscapes from the Grampians to Wilson's Prom. There are vinyards, rivers and lakes, whatever you want you will find in Victoria.

And then there is Melbourne, Victoria's largest city, which has been voted the World's Most Livable City. It is known for it's food, it's culture, it's sport, it's fashion and it's coffee and is spectacular. Often overlooked by overseas visitors because it is not home to the Opera House or Harbour Bridge, Melbourne has a lot to offer and I would encourage anyone to come and explore this vibrant city.
