Marvellous Melbourne Music

october 5th plans.jpg

A post on my FB newsfeed was all it took for me to spend a great Sunday afternoon enjoying the sights and sounds that Melbourne has to offer (and when it's free it's even better). If I had not come across that status, I might have spent my Sunday like every other doing...........not a lot!!!!

Instead I took my camera, and my friend Linda and headed into the city. A few days ago I was enjoying

Victoria's natural beauties at Phillip Island, today I got to enjoy it's man made ones.

I love getting off the train at Flinders Station and the vibe around Fed Square, there always seems to be something going on and people milling around and today was no exception. There was a band playing, but we didn't linger as other music awaited at Docklands.

We took the City Circle Tram most of the way, the trams come every (supposedly) 12 minutes and does a 'circle' loop of the city. It's a free service which has an onboard commentary giving plenty of information about Melbourne and even after the many times that I have travelled on them I look forward to hearing the commentaries and what they have to say.

The tram didn't do the complete Dockland loop which was okay because it gave us a chance to walk down the boardwalk with it's little Sunday market and I realised that in all the times I have been in the Dockland area I hadn't walked down that boardwalk.

....and again I realised how I take the city I live in for granted, and really need to explore it with the eyes of someone who has never been here before.

Blues bands beckoned, and as we entered the mall streets at Harbortown we were transported to Memphis (which gave me something to add to my To Do List.....to take a blues band crawl around music city ) We hadn't even reached the main venue, the Wonderland Spiegeltent, but at a smaller stage in the middle of the mall, the first of many great bands of the day was playing. Sitting in the sunshine, drinking coffee and listening to them play was divine...(might switch to bourbon when I am in Memphis ;) )

The bands and coffees finished around the same time and we headed to the main attraction, the Wonderland Spiegeltent. It's a great, intimate venue. (although jam packed today) "Spiegeltent" is Dutch for mirror tent, these Belgium traveling dance halls have been graced by stars such as Edith Piaff and Marlene Dietrich, which was fitting as the first act we saw Kelly Auty, was singing a little Edith Piaff when we got there.

Not only were we entertained by five great artists, Kelly Auty, Dreamboogie, Greg Dodd and the Hoodoo Men, Johnny Rieger Band and John McNamara, but we had a great display of the silks, and I couldn't help but admire the core strength and skills that the artist showed (and the courage....some of the drops she did required a heap of that).

I am so pleased that someones post of my FB feed caught my eye because I would have missed out on a great day, and I had this thought, when I go away I research, I look at what is on while I am there (are there any special performances/shows/festivals or celebrations?) so why the heck don't I do it in my own home town?

First thing I am going to do when I get off this blog is go to What's On Melbourne and see what my new blog entry might be :)
