Today was another adventure as we headed to Pisa for the day (with a quick-or not so quick if you have to rely on Google maps-stop at the hotel in Florence to drop off our bags) Pisa is pretty and so much more than the Leaning Tower, but of course we had to stop and take that iconic photo that one does at the tower, (it was rather a pleasant spot to sit and have a hot chocolate too 😀) We wandered from the tower to the central train station and there are some really pretty piazzas and buildings that probably not a lot of tourists get to see unless they are coming on the train- I know the package tours tend to just concentrate on the Piazza del Duomo area with the cathedral and the tower but there is so much more to see. The Arno River was in full flow, I don't know if the pictures below do it justice, but it was running fast and full of debris as there have been massive flooding in the Tuscan Apennines where the river flows from and there were flood barriers and sand bags being put in place while we were there, and just as we crossed the bridge the police were preparing to close the bridge. We eventually got to the train and caught a slightly earlier one than planned (because it had started bucketing down) but that was a good thing because it was the last train out of Pisa (the rest were cancelled) We got stuck half way for 75 minutes )because of 'weather conditions') and it wasn't until we were back at the hotel watching the news that we realised how bad it had got in Pisa. (seems like the floods are following us so it will be interesting to see if we get through the next few days without them) Florence and Pisa and train trip from Venice
